Over forty years ago, Jeanne Gevaert graciously took me as an apprentice, an experience which enhanced my entire life. I would like to write an article/obituary for Jeanne as a tribute to her, so her name and work can be readily researched. So many years have passed that I can't recall the names of her family members, and only the rough details of her family's flight from Nazis during WWII. Anyone who can provide any information that would enhance a description of her life and work is respectively asked to contact me. She was such a great person, it isn't proper that she should fade into obscurity and the fog of time. My email is: gary.h.kilgore@att.net

Condoléances

I am so very sorry to hear of her passing. Jeanne was a wonderful lady. She shall be greatly missed. I met Jeanne in 1994. I took her into my home because I thought she was homeless. She stayed with me and my husband for quite a while until she was well enough to travel and decided it was time for her to go. At the end of her stay she wanted to pay us for our kindness. She would tell me stories of her life growing up but I never dreamed she was who she said she was until it was time to take her home. My husband and I drove her home on Thanksgiving day and then and only then did we know who she was. She fell in love with my husband and me and kept wanting to give us things we kept refusing but she insisted, she gave us a book and asked us not to open it until we got home. It was a book of her father Edgar Gevaret. (Prior to her leaving our home she would write us checks but I would cut them into pieces because we were not doing this for money). One day she showed up at our house in her truck and said she was leaving Atlanta and wanted to leave some things with us. She gave my husband the cattle scuplture and me a small lamb plack, I called one of her professsor friends and he said that this was Jeanne's way of thanking us for what we did for her by taking her in and not asking her any questions. You see we gave her a home, food and love and not asking anything in return. My husdand and I will truly miss her.

Condoléances

I apprenticed to Belgian sculptress, Jeanne Gevaert, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A from 1970 -1972. I and another former apprentice of Jeanne, both lost contact with her
around 1994. Is this the Jeanne who was a sculptress? Regardless, I offer my condolences to the family.
